1. It's Shackleford Island, not Shackleton ;) 2. Those canals off Oyster Creek were very likely dug by Roosevelt's WMA's during the Great Depression. They are drainage canals, in short, designed to make the (still low) high ground a little drier. They are also excellent marsh habitats, and mosquito breeders of excellence. 3. The old fellow in the camper at the HI Fishing Center is a grand old gentleman.
